  3. EFL Cup third round splitpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 27 August

    16:11 BST 27 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It's time to remind everyone about the changes having to be implemented for the third round due to the expansion of European competitions this season.

Essentially, Manchester United and Tottenham will play their third round ties in the week commencing 16 September, with the remainder of the games the following week.

This is because the Europa League starts in the week commencing 23 September as each European competition has been granted an 'exclusive' week by UEFA.

The Champions League begins on 17 September, which means the EFL Cup third round is effectively being seeded so neither United nor Tottenham get a Champions League team as there would be a clash.

Effectively, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham will each be drawn in the first six matches (there will already have been a draw to confirm the order and whether each club is home or away). The rest of the draw will be open.

    Everyone got that?

    Back to the Euros...

It's the quarter-finals and hosts Germany just manage to push Spain to a extra-time thanks to a Florian Wirtz goal.

The game looks set to be decided on penalties, but up steps Arsenal's new man, Mikel Merino.

Merino's goal was the the third-latest winning goal in a Euro game (118:52).

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told Arsenal's club website that “Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility," Arteta, added.

“As we all saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament. "

Some Newcastle fans may remember Mikel Merino from the 2017-18 campaign.

The then 21-year-old joined the Magpies on loan from Borussia Dortmund and after a few months he joined the club on a permanent basis - signing a five-year-deal.

But, after nine months after signing a five-year-deal he was back on the road where he joined Real Sociedad for an undisclosed fee.

Since being back in the Basque region of Spain, he has made the jump from Spain's under-21 team to their senior team. Merino featured from the bench in the Euro 2024 final between England and Spain.

  9. Wolves fail in move for goalkeeper Ramsdalepublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 27 August

    15:40 BST 27 August

    Nick Mash*ter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Wolves' move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is off.

The deal for the 26-year-old has proved too expensive for the Premier League side and it is considered over, BBC Sport understands.

Ramsdale could still leave the Emirates before the transfer deadline on Friday but it is highly unlikely a move to Molineux will be resurrected.

Wolves had made a loan offer with an option to buy, for around £20m, for the England international last week and remained in talks with the Gunners over the weekend.

Ramsdale, who has five England caps, joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 in a deal worth £24m and has another two years left on his contract.

Finances are tight at Molineux, despite bringing in almost £100m with the sales of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman this summer to Chelsea and West Ham respectively.

Boss Gary O'Neil warned, after Sunday's 6-2 home defeat to Chelsea, the club needed to be comfortable with their transfer business when the window closed.

He said: "When it shuts we need to be comfortable with where we are.

"There's a lot of work for myself and I need to get more out of the group we have. Then there's an understanding the Premier League is tough and if you sell good players it makes you weaker."

Their £20m offer for Burnley winger Luca Koleosho was rejected last week and that deal is also unlikely to progress.

BBC took a deep dive into Pep Guardiola’s relentless pursuit of perfection and the methods and motivations that have led him to leave a lasting imprint on the beautiful game.

"At the end of his first season, Man City just managed to get into the top four. He said 'don't worry it will be different next season, we are going to win the league'," Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher recalled.

"He was called out and told his total football doesn't work. It shows the measure of the guy as he knew."

Everton striker Martina Piemonte has left the club to join Italian side Lazio.

The 26-year-old joined Everton on a two-year deal in July 2023 but has struggled to cement a place in the starting XI.

The Italy international scored four goals and assisted one in 23 games last season.

Everton have already signed ex-Liverpool winger Melissa Lawley and Nigeria striker Toni Payne during this transfer window.

Chelsea have reportedly made an offer to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

However, there appears to be little evidence of a bid at this stage with Chelsea among the clubs to hold a long-term interest in the England international, 28, who is unwilling to renew his contract at Brentford.

The Blues don't rule out a move for Toney before deadline day, if the fee and wages make financial sense, but are widely believed to be prioritising a move for Napoli's Victor Osimhen.

Chelsea remain keen to sign the Nigerian with Romelu Lukaku moving in the other direction for a fee of around £30million.

Lukaku has even been given permission to do a medical which is expected to take place in Rome tomorrow.

Toney, meanwhile, remains a target for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League before the transfer deadline passes on August 30.

    Alex Howell
    BBC football news reporter

I reported earlier that Eddie Nketiah is close to joining Crystal Palace and a deal for the Arsenal front man is getting even closer to being done.

The deal worth up to £30m is believed to be £25m upfront with £5m in add ons.

Arsenal have given permission to Nketiah to do his medical with Crystal Palace ahead of a deal being completed and it's understood that agreeing personal terms for the England international will not be a problem.

Transfer updates as they happened: Merino signs for Arsenal and Man Utd close in on Ugarte plus your Oasis XI (8)Image source, Getty Images

Chelsea have signed 12 players this summer with an average age of 21 despite criticism that they have 'too many players' and their squad is too young.

Even more ironically, the last signing is a goalkeeper in £17million Genk youngster Mike Penders, who will join in 2025, amid further ridicule that the club have nine potential options for the position.

However, for many inside the building at Stamford Bridge, this is a strategy that will pay off and the 6-2 win away at Wolves is potentially sign of progress for their approach.

They expect this young team, which has seen a further £276.6m of talent added this summer to well over £1billion in the previous four transfer windows under this Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership, to start competing for titles very soon.

There is a feeling that manager Enzo Maresca is a better fit for this club than Mauricio Pochettino was and that players like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Noni Madueke will naturally improve as they mature together.

It's also worth noting that nearly £140m has been raised in player sales this summer to help balance the books with further outgoings to come.
